Book Review: Wrathbone and Other Stories by Jason Parent

Wrathbone and Other Stories by Jason Parent

While I was perusing my email, I was wickedly surprised to receive a request to do a book review from an author I came across on Twitter. I had not had the opportunity to read his work before this so I was excited and honored to get the chance to do so.

Wrathbone
The first story, Wrathbone is a haunting historical fiction that tell's the story of Major Henry Rathbone a Confederate soldier, and the object of his affections, Clara Harris It chronicles the tale of his decent into madness after failing to be able to save President Lincoln when he and Clara were invited to be their guest's at Ford's Theater that dark night in history.

The build up is intense and you definitely empathize with the characters and the dark path they are plummeted into. I love when an author can write a story poetically, The flow of the wording and a description so vivid that you feel as though you are in the time that the event's transpired.
That is definitely accomplished in Wrathbone.
I am a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft and you can see the influence of these great author's in the story.

The Only Good Lawyer
This story brings us back to current time. It is about a sheisty lawyer named Bradley Walsh who got more than he bargained for when trying his case he thought was in the bag. He tried to railroad the wrong witness and got what he deserved when Karma was sped along with the help of a Voodoo Man. Don't ever cross a Voodoo Daddy (literally). I really liked this story as well! I love anything to do with Voodoo.

Dorian's Mirror
This is the story of what could happen if you are a shallow, self-absorbed douche lol.
Dorian prides himself on nothing but his good look's, but what happens when the fear of losing that becomes all too real. Too much boozing and too much narcissism lead to Dorian's demise. I liked this story but I would have liked to see a little more at the end as far as the conclusion but regardless it does fuel the imagination.

For The Birds
For The Birds tells the Story of a man, his best friend that is a bird, and two cold blooded burglars. Nev's best friend is a parrot named Joji that, to his surprise, has found a liking to meat. I won't tell any more because I don't want to give too much away but all I can say is WOW lol! This was a different kind of story which I totally dig. It's like Cujo for bird owners lmao!
I was expecting the story to go a different way but it had a different twist.

Revenge Is A Dish
Maurice is a Master Chef who is offered the opportunity of being the chef aboard a yacht belonging to a wealthy doctor and his much younger wife who are sailing around the world. When tight quarters and the bad choice of screwing around with the employers wife land him in the trying situation of being dumped in the middle of the ocean, he starts considering revenge of his own. Before becoming a meal for the sharks a turn of event's may just make that possible but even he couldn't have planned how everything was about to go down. This story will absolutely surprise and satisfy!

So with this being the last story, I have to say the first, Wrathbone and the last, Revenge Is A Dish are my favorites with The Good Lawyer coming right behind them. Never the less all the stories are sure to please. I am excited to see what else will come from the mind of Jason Parent.

I definitely recommend getting a copy of Wrathbone and Other Stories. Grab a blanket and a cup of coffee and curl up with these hauntingly good stories. Then let me know what you think :-).
