First Thoughts On Krampus

I remember when I was a kid and I watched Silent Night, Deadly Night and I loved it. Maybe because it show's a dark side to something so good and special. Not to ruin the holiday or try to make it evil. I love Christmas in all it's sweet gushiness but just as in life, for every yin is a yang..for every light there is a dark. Sometime's you need to see the dark to realize how good the light is.
So since Silent Night, Deadly Night I haven't seen any good horror movies centered around Christmas. I am super excited to see Krampus! Like a lot of scary movies, it is a cautionary tale. If you have those family members that fight, are cruel to each other, and are ungrateful you will enjoy watching this play out lol. In all seriousness, it definitely looks like some spooky good fun.

Krampus is written and directed by Michael Dougherty who most known for one of my favorites, Trick R' Treat. It's about a dysfunctional family that get's together for Christmas and `as the fights break out, the youngest son loses his belief in the magic and goodness of the holiday. This just happens to bring forth an ancient evil who is intent on punishing the non-believing family. Now they must try to band together to save themselves from the demon and all the Christmas icons he has turned into monstrous creatures to bring down the family.

There is also real folklore behind this as well. Krampus come's from German roots. He is supposedly St. Nick's counterpart. While St. Nick rewarded kids for being good, Krampus would swat them and take them down to his lair. He would come out on December  6th or Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) and punish the bad kids. It is also Nikolaustag which is St. Nicholas Day where kids would look out their front door to see if the shoe or a boot they left out contained a present (for good kids) or a rod (for bad kids). I don't know about you but I think that might be extra motivation for kids to be good lol. I know I would!

I am gonna try to go see Krampus soon.

So does your family have any spooky Christmas tales?

Sad Post-Goodbye Rocco

I haven't been posting because things have been rough around here. My younger sister got a dog that has basically been a service dog 15 years ago and 2 weeks ago she had to be put to sleep because she was in heart failure and she had fluid in her lungs. It broke my sister's heart. She found an adorable puppy that she paid $280 for and the women told her he had his first shots. She is staying with me right now and she brought him back to the house, he was perfect! A few day's ago he started being very lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink. She took him to the vet and they said he has Parvo.  We started trying to nurse him through it right away. Wednesday his little body just couldn't take it any more and he passed away. It has been heartbreaking. He was only 10 weeks old! The women knew he had Parvo when she sold him to my sister, how shitty is that?! We are heartbroken beyond belief and I am furious with that women. It is a horrible virus and even more horrible way for them to die. Please, Please as soon as they are old enough, vaccinate your furbabies!

Needless to say I have been drowning my sorrows in horror movies and shows. Mostly Zombie stuff.

Finished Halloween Decorations

I didn't get to do nearly as much as I was planning but I did a few thing's. Most of my decorating was indoor's and not as organized as I would like but it is way better than my outdoor decorations. It is rather pitiful but considering most of the houses on my street had NOTHING for decorations...it could have been worse. I will be writing about that in another post.

I only did the three window silhouettes and I did a cut out for the garage, carved the pumpkin, hung some lights on the doorway and a sign and put together a monster to hang in the tree. That was the extent of my outdoor stuff...ugh, just sad.

I did a lot of makeup! My daughter, my sister, and her fiance plus mine.

We did get some trick r' treater's but not much.

We ended the night by having nacho's and watching the new Poltergeist. That was fun! It wasn't the original but it was good. I liked the special effects. It did add some extra spookiness to it. I know there are die hard Original only fans but you just have to appreciate for what it is.

So here are the pictures I took of Our Halloween :-)

And This is Us :-)

Hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween! We have bigger and better plans for next year! Going to have to start working on it through out the year starting like January.

Happy Day Of The Dead!

Or Feliz Dia De Los Muertos! We Are honoring the many relatives we have lost. We actually lost 8 family members on my mom's side and 5 on my dad's side. Then there was 4 on my ex's side so it has been pretty constant. The hardest was my mom. She was sick for a long time and we had a hard relationship for a long time but at the same time she was a devoted mom who tried so hard that it drove her to the thing's she didn't want to be. She was a beautiful kind hearted woman that had a hard life. I got a better relationship with her when I was older and was her caregiver for years.
I love how The Day Of The Dead celebrates the life of the people and you honor that life. We are blessed to have a very multicultural family. We have everything from Irish and Filipino to my daughter who also has Creole. The great thing about that is we can explore the many different traditions and beliefs of the various cultures.

We got to go to the Dia De Los Muertos Festival in Mesa and it was nice even though it wasn't on the actual day. Today my daughter and I are going to make Skull Cookies. Next year we are building an alter.

Here are the pictures from the festival.

Pan de Muerto
(Bread of the Dead)
Ingredients:
•             1/4 cup milk
•             1/4 cup (half a stick) margarine or butter, cut into 8 pieces
•             1/4 cup sugar
•             1/2 teaspoon salt
•             1 package active dry yeast
•             1/4 cup very warm water
•             2 eggs
•             3 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted
•             1/2 teaspoon anise seed
•             1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
•             2 teaspoons sugar
Instructions: Bring milk to boil and remove from heat. Stir in margarine or butter, 1/4 cup sugar and salt.
In large bowl, mix yeast with warm water until dissolved and let stand 5 minutes. Add the milk mixture.
Separate the yolk and white of one egg. Add the yolk to the yeast mixture, but save the white for later. Now add flour to the yeast and egg. Blend well until dough ball is formed.
Flour a pastry board or work surface very well and place the dough in center. Knead until smooth. Return to large bowl and cover with dish towel. Let rise in warm place for 90 minutes. Meanwhile, grease a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Knead dough again on floured surface. Now divide the dough into fourths and set one fourth aside. Roll the remaining 3 pieces into "ropes."
On greased baking sheet, pinch 3 rope ends together and braid. Finish by pinching ends together on opposite side. Divide the remaining dough in half and form 2 "bones." Cross and lay them atop braided loaf.
Cover bread with dish towel and let rise for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix anise seed, cinnamon and 2 teaspoons sugar together. In another bowl, beat egg white lightly.
When 30 minutes are up, brush top of bread with egg white and sprinkle with sugar mixture, except on cross bones. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Japan And Halloween

I eventually would love to travel to different states and countries to see how they celebrate Halloween. I love travel and I love learning about different places and cultures, and of course, I LOVE Halloween so it makes perfect sense that I would want to see how they mesh in different locations.

I recently can across a video of Halloween In Japan and that inspired this post.

Now, if you have read some of my blog I'm sure I must have mentioned that I also love Asian Horror movies! I love that a lot of their horror stores come from their particular history and mythology. Plus they are just really good at being creepy ;-)

Since Halloween is not as common in Japan it would be very interesting to see how they have adopted some of the traditions. I found out from another video that they still don't Trick R' Treat though unless you are a little kid and that is only at a parade.

I definitely want to go there during Halloween!
